In an emergency situation, search and rescue dogs can be critical in saving lives. On Thursday, some of those four-legged heroes were honing their skills in Beverly.
At the Massachusetts Task Force‘s facility, a person hid in a pile of rubble as the dogs worked against the wind to sniff them out.
The practice is crucial for real-world crises.
Handlers said they train for hundreds of hours with their dogs, and in a variety of situations.
“We try to find as many different scenarios to train in so that it’s nothing new to the dog whenever we show up to a different location,” said Laureen Elwell, Massachusetts Task Force canine handler.
Handlers say when it comes to a real catastrophe, time is of the essence and the dogs play a crucial role in those rescue efforts.
