Welcome to the NHL Buzz. Throughout the 2021-22 season, NHL.com will have you covered with the latest news.
Forward T.J. Oshie was placed in NHL COVID-19 protocol and won’t play for the Capitals against the Los Angeles Kings on Sunday (7 p.m. ET; NBCSWA, BSW, ESPN+, NHL LIVE).
The 34-year-old forward has scored 11 points (four goals, seven assists) in 14 games. He missed 16 games during two stints with lower-body injuries earlier this season.
Oshie joins forwards Evgeny Kuznetsov and Nicklas Backstrom in protocol. Kuznetsov entered Wednesday and Backstrom on Friday after making his season debut at the Chicago Blackhawks on Wednesday following his recovery from a left hip injury.
“Obviously, it’s not what you want,” Capitals coach Peter Laviolette said. “You’re [missing] Backstrom and Kuznetsov and Oshie and lots of guys on your power play and top six guys. But it is what it is. We’ve got to move forward here and we’ll see what we have available. I’m not sure.”
With Oshie out, the Capitals recalled Joe Snively from Hershey of the American Hockey League. The 25-year-old forward, who is from Herndon, Virginia and grew up playing in Washington’s Little Caps program, could make his NHL debut. He scored 22 points (eight goals, 14 assists) in 21 games with Hershey this season.
Capitals forwards Nic Dowd and defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk have exited protocol and will play against the Kings, Laviolette said. Forward Garnet Hathaway technically remains in protocol, but participated in morning skate. — Tom Gulitti
The Blue Jackets canceled practice after placing forwards Boone Jenner and Jack Roslovic, and defenseman Gabriel Carlsson, in protocol. They are scheduled to have a morning skate in Columbus on Monday before traveling to play the Buffalo Sabres (7 p.m. ET; MSG-B, BSOH, ESPN+, NHL LIVE).
Philip Danault was placed in NHL COVID-19 protocol Sunday.
The center is expected to be replaced in the Kings lineup by Lias Andersson when they visit the Washington Capitals on Sunday (7 p.m. ET; NBCSWA, BSW, ESPN+, NHL LIVE).
Danault has scored 14 points (four goals, 10 assists) in 29 games this season. He joins defenseman Drew Doughty and goalie Cal Petersen in protocol.
Goalie Garret Sparks was recalled from Ontario of the American Hockey League to back up Jonathan Quick against the Capitals.
Matt Martin and Robin Salo were placed in COVID-19 protocol before the game against the Vegas Golden Knights on Sunday.
Martin was replaced by Ross Johnston on the fourth line at left wing with Casey Cizikas and Cal Clutterbuck.
Sebastian Aho played for Salo on the third defense pair to the left of Andy Greene.
Joel Farabee returned Saturday after missing seven games with a shoulder injury. The forward scored the game-tying goal in the third period for the Flyers in a 4-3 victory against the Ottawa Senators.
“I felt really comfortable, no issue with the injury or anything like that,” Farabee said. “Maybe conditioning a little off. Having been out two weeks, it’s really tough. You can simulate the game load in practice, but you can’t simulate the intensity and stuff like that.”
Goalie Carter Hart did not play because of an unspecified illness. Martin Jones made 28 saves.
Forward Max Willman and a staff member were placed in COVID-19 protocol. Willman scored three points (two goals, one assist) in 12 games.
Jeff Blashill did not coach the Red Wings in a 5-2 win against the New Jersey Devils on Saturday after he was placed in COVID-19 protocol.
Goalie Alex Nedeljkovic, forwards Carter Rowney and Givani Smith, and assistant Alex Tanguay were also placed in protocol.
Goalie Calvin Pickard and forward Riley Barber were recalled from Grand Rapids of the American Hockey League.
Red Wings assistant Doug Houda was joined by Grand Rapids coach Ben Simon and assistant Todd Krygier.
Jesse Puljujarvi was placed in COVID-19 protocol and missed a 5-3 win against the Seattle Kraken on Saturday.
The forward has scored 23 points (10 goals, 13 assists) in 28 games this season.
Puljujarvi joined forwards Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Ryan McLeod, defenseman Duncan Keith and coach Dave Tippett in protocol.
Nugent-Hopkins was third on the Oilers with 22 assists and 25 points in 28 games this season; McLeod scored three goals in 18 games; Keith has one goal and four assists in 20 games.
