Arsenal are interested in Juventus midfielder Arthur Melo, according to recent reports in Italy.
Italian outlet Calciomercato have reported that the Gunners are interested in the Brazil international, who is no longer wanted by the Turin-based club.
The report claims that the north Londoners have already contacted Juventus over Swedish winger Dejan Kulusevski and could make a move for Arthur in the coming weeks as well.
The 25-year-old had established himself as one of La Liga's most promising midfielders during his time with Catalan giants Barcelona, however, he has struggled since leaving the Camp Nou for a reported £63million in January 2020.
Now, an exit appears likely considering he has fallen down the pecking order under current head coach Massimiliano Allegri, who has often preferred Manuel Locatelli and Rodrigo Bentancur in his midfield pivot this season.
If Arsenal were to make a move they would be getting a player reminiscent of Spanish icon Xavi, according to footballing great Lionel Messi.
Speaking back in 2018 to Tot Costa, via Sport, the Messi hailed Arthur's talent, admitting he was surprised how good the diminutive playmaker was.
“Those who came are very good", the Argentine international said. "Arthur I didn’t know that much about but he seems similar to Xavi. He’s very safe and trustworthy. He has the La Masia style.
“Playing short passes, without losing the ball, and he grasped it quickly, the dynamic of the team.”
The Gunners could be short in midfield in the coming weeks, with the likes of Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny both heading to the Africa Cup of Nations in the New Year – assuming it goes ahead as planned – meaning a January transfer makes sense for all parties.
