In this 2017 photo, Layton Christian head football coach Dru Jones poses for a portrait at the school’s football field. Jones accepted a teaching and head football coaching position at Viewmont High School in December 2021.
Dru Jones had a shorter commute to work on Wednesday morning. Instead of driving from Davis County to Tooele High, he drove to Viewmont High, where he was introduced as head football coach on Wednesday morning.
Jones, who will teach at Viewmont starting in January, stepped down from his position at Tooele High on Tuesday.
He’d been the head coach there for three seasons, totaling a 13-18 overall record including a 7-3 mark in 2021.
Before that, he was the head coach at Layton Christian Academy and he’s been an assistant coach at a handful of area schools.
Jones replaces Scott Ditty, who stepped down last month after eight seasons in charge. Jones said he initially planned on moving to Tooele, or close by, to cut the long commute, but that never materialized.
“It’s hard (to leave Tooele High) because I wear my heart on my sleeve and pour my heart into any program I’m at. I’ve always been told by mentor coaches when you jump into a program you jump all the way in,” Jones told the Standard-Examiner.
He’s been commuting from Davis County to Tooele five days a week, 70 minutes each way, ever since he took the Tooele job.
In that sense, the Viewmont position will be better for him since it’s in the same county, he said.
“It’s always hard to say goodbye, but at the end of the day, I know this is the right decision for my family,” Jones said.
Lately, Viewmont has struggled with sheer numbers of players in the football program, a scenario that many have long seen coming since the boundary split with Farmington High a few years ago.
The Vikings went 3-6 this season and 1-4 in Region 5. Injuries to key players, including dynamic junior quarterback Luke Jacobs, hampered Viewmont down the stretch.
“Tooele’s been great, I love them and hope they succeed. … I’m also excited for Viewmont and to get the ball rolling,” Jones said.
