The historic battle comes to an end as Argentine collects seventh Ballon d’Or
Whether they saw it the same as us or not, the historic battle between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi on the stage at the Ballon d’Or ceremony kept us entertained for nearly 15 years.
However, as both competitors come towards the end of their careers, the battle appears to be fading.
On Monday November 29, Messi won the prestigious award for the seventh time in his career, with Ronaldo finishing in sixth place.
The Manchester United striker was weighed down by Juventus‘ poor season, as well as Portugal’s inconsistent performances at Euro 2020.
Since that period, he has moved to England, to a club that currently sit in eighth place in the Premier League.
Ronaldo is 36 years old, however, meaning his prime is behind him whether he likes it or not, although his numbers still speak volumes, with 10 goals in 15 games for his club this season.
The relationship between Messi and Ronaldo has always been one of respect. The two have always acknowledged each other and how they challenge one another.
But as the pair get older, it would appear that Messi has tipped the scales in his favour, as he now has two more Ballon d’Or’s than his rival.
Ronaldo‘s last win came in 2017, a year before Luka Modric stepped in to claim an award following his World Cup campaign with Croatia.
Since then, Messi has won two more awards, taking the rivalry and running off with it.
