Week 15 Tough Calls
Covering the impact of coronavirus on the sports world
London rivals Arsenal and West Ham United are both in the mix for the top four, and they square off Wednesday in an English Premier League clash. Arsenal (8-2-6) is favored at home and has lost just once in the past 12 matchups with West Ham, winning eight of those. The Hammers (8-4-4) played to a scoreless draw with Burnley on Sunday but still came out of the weekend fourth in the EPL table. Arsenal is sixth, just two points behind West Ham, after beating Southampton 3-0 on Saturday.
Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. ET. Caesars Sportsbook lists Arsenal as the +116 favorite (risk $100 to win $116) on the 90-minute money line in its latest Arsenal vs. West Ham odds, with West Ham the +235 underdog. A draw is priced at +245 and the over-under for total goals scored is set at 2.5. The Gunners put on an impressive offensive display against the Saints on Saturday, getting goals from Alexandre Lacazette, Martin Odegaard and Gabriel. Lacazette led the attack as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was benched for disciplinary reasons, and the Frenchman scored his second goal in six starts. Aubameyang will be out of the lineup on Wednesday, but Emile Smith Rowe, who also was out because of a groin injury, should be back Wednesday. Smith Rowe is the team’s top scorer with five goals.
The last matchup was a 3-3 draw at London Stadium in March. Arsenal had won three meetings in a row before that, including a 2-1 win at the Emirates last September. Arsenal is 69-40-35 all-time against West Ham. The Gunners have won four straight home games in all competitions, outscoring their opponents 8-0.
The Hammers are missing top defenders Kurt Zouma and Angelo Ogbonna, but they kept a clean sheet without them Sunday. The Gunners have talent, but that has translated into just 21 goals while they have conceded 22. West Ham is one of five Premier League teams with a positive goal differential, scoring 28 while allowing 19. It has plenty of talent of its own in the attack, with six players who have scored at least twice.
Michail Antonio (six goals) was on fire to start the season and is overdue for a breakout. He is tied for third in the league in shots (44). Pablo Fornals (four), Said Benrahma (three) and Jarrod Bowen (three) also could cause trouble for the Arsenal back line. They have combined for nine assists. Declan Rice (three goals, one assist) and Tomas Soucek (one goal, two assists) give the Hammers a slight edge in the midfield. The Hammers are confident in their ability to hang with the top teams in the league. They knocked off Chelsea 3-2 less than two weeks ago and beat Liverpool by the same score last month.
Green has taken a close look at West Ham vs. Arsenal from every angle, and he is leaning over on the goal total. He also provides his two confident best bets, including a strong money-line play, and gives his full breakdown of the match. He’s only sharing his Premier League picks at SportsLine.
